Who to Hear

With the biggest DJ’s in the planet all flocking to Ultra Music Festival in Miami everyone knows they should be checking out David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Tiesto, DeadMau5, the last performance by Swedish House Mafia, and a long line of others we could continue to list. We wanted to focus on a few acts we are excited about outside of all the EDM Megastars. We asked AEO Resident Music Expert Brad for his ultimate Ultra line-up:

The Weeknd – A string of mix tape releases in 2011 got The Weeknd noticed as an emerging artist in what some refer to as PBR&B. It is darker and usually slower than your typical R&B and brings in more rock and some electronic elements. Other artists thrown into this genre are Frank Ocean, Theophilus London, and How to Dress Well.

Classixx – AE just partnered with this LA DJ Duo on our current Spring Break playlist in stores. They also came out to our photo shoot in Palm Springs to DJ for a few hours for us and are offering a free exclusive remix download.

Fatboy Slim – One of the bigger forces in the popularization of electronic music. It wasn’t even called EDM yet during Fatboy Slim’s peak in the late 90′s. Fatboy Slim is an icon and likely an influence to a majority of the other performers at Ultra. This is a must see.” -Brad S., AEO Music Expert

Where to Eat

We asked our friend, foodie, and former Miami resident Jake (follow him on Twitter: @jakemwatt) for his best eating and partying recommendations in the city.

Off the Beach:

“My absolute favorite spot in Miami is the River Oyster Bar. I miss this place every day of my life. It’s an enclave of sanity, when the doors shut behind you, you’re transported to Boston or Newport. The bar staff is incredible – Amanda and Shawn are spectacular at everything and remember you no matter how many times you have been in or passed out. The food is absolutely incredible and is where locals go for the best oysters and seafood in a city surrounded by oysters and seafood.

Zuma: This place is legend as far as proper sushi, Japanese, and sake. My last meal in Miami was at this spot and Roger Federer and his wife sat directly behind me.

Sakaya Kitchen: A gastropub/quick eats place in Midtown Miami that fills you up. The orange spare ribs with coconut rice are enough to make me weep just writing of them here.

On the beach:

Pubbelly: The jewel in the culinary crown of Miami’s gastropubs. Innovative chef, intimate atmosphere. It’s like you’re in NYC, but someone turned the heat up.

Yardbird: A southern cooking mecca.  The food is outrageous from the shrimp and grits to the chicken and waffles. This is the Sunday brunch spot for southern expats. Best drink: Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade.

Red Steakhouse: The best steak south of the Mason Dixon Line. Chef Peter’s wine selection is one of the best in the city, not to mention he does a more than respectable Italian menu in a city that has little Italian cuisine.

Scarpetta: There’s one in NY and Vegas, but the Scarpetta in the Fontainebleau is the best. Amazing Italian, amazing views, amazing crowd.

What to Do

This wouldn’t be a Miami guide without a Will Smith reference. Party in the city where the heat is on at some of the country’s best night spots.

SoHo Beach House: Super chic, you never know who you’re going to be sharing a table with or next to (Russell Simmons for me). You know about the SoHo House.

Wynwood Walls: Gallery and graffiti haven. Awesome just to walk up and down the street, pop in a bar for a few pints, then head back out and talk about art.

Juvia: It’s on 1111 Lincoln Rd. (Which is a big deal in Miami) and overlooks all of SoBe. The food and wine are way over priced, but you pay for the view.

Base is a hangout. Part clothing, part lounge. They’re playing (and selling) music in there that won’t hit a Paris disco for another two months. Also, it’s one of the few places in Miami you can buy French Vogue.
